Sarah Siskind, daughter of Howard and Karen Siskind, participated in a ritual bath (mikveh) in accepting the Jewish religion.   In the photo with young Sarah from left to right are her paternal grandparents Eliot & Phyllis Siskind, her father and mother, and her maternal grandparents Richard & Diane Meade.   Afterwards, there was a celebration dinner at David Chu's China Bistro in Baltimore.

Kneseth Israel Hebrew School participated in a Tu B'Shevat Seder and learned about the "Jewish New Year of Trees" celebrated on the 15th day in the month of Shevat.  This minor holiday relates to the various tithes that must be separated from produce grown in the Holy Land.  It is customary to eat fruit, particularly from the "Seven Kinds" that are singled out by the Torah in its praise of the bounty of the Holy Land.  The fruits and grains include wheat, barley, grapes, figs, pomegranates, olives and dates.

Boys & Men's Choir Concert

The Jewish Music Heritage Project hosted their 2nd annual concert at Beth Jacob Synagogue in Baltimore.  The choir sang a variety of great sacred prayers set to the classical liturgy of the Eastern European Synagogue.  It is the only organization of it's kind in the world (for more information, visit their Web site at www.jmhp.org).  Our own Rabbi Moshe Weisblum and his two youngest sons Meir and Natan performed in the choir, each getting solos or duets.

Purim Megillah Reading

About 100 people attended the reading of the Megillah Esther on Purim on Saturday night, March 3.  The spirit of celebration was alive and well, as people enjoyed the mitzvah of hearing the megillah being read.

Kneseth Israel Hebrew School hosted a Purim Talent Show that featured many talented, skilled, and confident children of our synagogue.  Following the show, nationally known comedian, juggler, and magician Michael Rosman delighted, entertained, and "wowed" the 100+ people in attendance. A great big thanks to Holly Lindeman for chairing the Talent Show, and for contacting many parents and children in the synagogue to ensure that every child could participate.

Yom Hazikaron/Yom Ha'atzmuat/Lag B'Omer Program

A special Havdalah service and program was observed at Congregation Kneseth Israel in commemoration of Israel Memorial Day (Yom Hazikaron), Israel Independence Day (Yom Ha'atzmuat) and the 33rd day of the Counting of the Omer (Lag B'Omer).  Israeli native Miriam Adelstein shared her experiences as a 10-year old living in Palestine at the time the State of Israel came into existence in 1948.  She also chanted a Haftorah from the Book of Amos.

Over a dozen volunteers from Kneseth Israel and Aleph Bet Jewish Day School gave up their Sunday morning to come to the synagogue to paint, landscape, and perform many tasks for the playground and the equipment used by children attending the nursery school and Jewish day school.
