Michael Davidson Bar Mitzvah
Saturday, January 31, 2004

Michael Davidson, son of Eric and Catherine Davidson, was Bar Mitzvahed on Saturday, January 31 (Parsha Bo).  Michael is an 8th-grader and honor student at Annapolis Middle School and a graduate of the Aleph Bet Jewish Day School.  Michael has donated some of his gift money from his Bar Mitzvah back to the synagogue towards the purchase of the marble tablets on the bimah that needed to be replaced.

Recognition of Outstanding Congregants at the Annual Meeting
Sunday, February 1, 2004

At the Annual Synagogue Meeting on Sunday, February 1, President Lore Singerman presented awards of appreciation to members that have devoted an enormous amount of their time and energy for the betterment of the shul.

Tu B'Shevat Seder
Sunday, February 8, 2004

Kneseth Israel's Reiter Auditorium was the site of a Tu B'Shevat seder sponsored by the Daniel Rothman Consolidated School.  Tu B'Shevat is the "New Year for trees", and is celebrated by eating a variety of fruits, especially fruits that are grown in Israel. About 100 people attended the event.

Sarah Stusek's Bat Mitzvah
February 14, 2004

Sarah Stusek was Bat Mitzvahed on Saturday night, February 14.  Sarah attended the Aleph Bet Jewish Day and is now an honor student at the Severn School.  

Purim Festivities
March 6-7, 2004

Once again, everyone had fun at Congregation Kneseth Israel during Purim.  The Megillah was read Saturday night, March 6 and Sunday morning, March 7, and a festive meal or "seudah" took place Sunday evening.

Ariel Strumpf Bat Mitzvah
March 13, 2004

Ariel Strumpf celebrated her Bat Mitzvah on Saturday evening, March 13.  She chanted the Haftorah Parshas Parah (Ezekiel 36:16-38).  Ariel is an honor student at Annapolis Middle School, plays lacrosse and loves to swim, and is in the school band.

Stephen Tham Bar Mitzvah
March 27, 2004

Stephen Tham celebrated his Bar Mitzvah on Saturday, March 27 (parsha Vayikra).  Stephen is a graduate of the Aleph Bet Jewish Day School and is a 7th grader at the Beth Tfiloh Jewish Day School.  In addition to a beautiful service and Kiddush, there was a celebration at the synagogue that evening with dinner and dancing.  Way to go, Stephen!

"Steve & Friends" Concert
March 28, 2004

The community was treated to an entertaining afternoon of music at the concert given by "Steve & Friends".  Dr. Stephen Glasser, a practicing internist from Baltimore, is also an accomplished singer.  The audience was treated to Yiddish melodies, popular Broadway and show tunes, modern classical, opera, and more.  A member of the Beth Tfiloh choir, he entertains along with Dr. William Milner, his accompanist on the piano. For more information on Steve & Friends, please contact Hinda Caplan.

Yom Hazikaron/Yom  Ha'atzmaut Commemoration
April 25, 2004

Sunday, April 25 (4 Iyar) was Yom Hazikaron, which is Israel's Memorial Day for their fallen soldiers.  The very next day is Yom Ha'atamaut, which is Israel's Independence Day.  Congregation Kneseth Israel hosted a program to commemorate these important events.  Guest speaker was Guy Shamdi, Director of Public Affairs at the Israeli Embassy.

Aleph Bet Jewish Day School Dinner Fund Raiser
Sunday, May 23, 2004

The Aleph Bet Jewish Day School had their annual dinner and fund raiser event at Congregation Kneseth Israel.  A casino night and silent auction raised several thousand dollars for the school.  Honored at this years event were Sara and Jack Schmerling, who have sent their four sons to Aleph Bet and were co-founders of the school.  Sara was a past president of the school (1991 - 1993), and the Schmerlings have served on numerous committees since the school opened in the fall of 1988.

Charlotte Krohn Bat Mitzvah
May 30, 2004

Charlotte Anne Krohn (pictured above with Rabbi Weisblum), daughter of Robert and Cathy Krohn, became a Bat Mitzvah on Sunday, May 30 at Congregation Kneseth Israel.  Charlotte is a 7th-grade student at the Beth Tfiloh Jewish Day School in Baltimore and is a graduate of the Aleph Bet Jewish Day School.  She is a 4th-generation Annapolitan.  Charlotte is a good student and a gifted writer.  Below is a poem that she wrote:

This is Me

Half of me is an elegant Lavender-    kind and gentle, trusting and honest, quietly waiting for a turn to speak my mind.

Yet deeper inside my heart and soul I'm a fiery amber-   full of passion and spunk, relaxed but energetic all at once,  like the wind rustling in the trees.

My colors may clash, but this is me!

Women's Torah Study Group

The popular "Women's Torah Study Group" meets at Congregation Kneseth Israel on a regular basis.  The group is led by Leslie Gradet, and studies the role that various women have played throughout the Bible. 

Rabbi Morris D. Rosenblatt Memorial Lecture
Sunday, June 20, 2004

The annual Rabbi Morris D. Rosenblatt Memorial Lecture took place on Father's Day.  Each year, a prominent speaker on Jewish issues has addressed the community at this event, which is around the yahrzeit of our beloved spiritual leader for parts of four different decades, Rabbi Morris Rosenblatt z'l.  Our distinguished guest speaker this year was Mr. Avraham Infeld, new President of Hillel, and founder of Melitz, and a very well-known educator who was a founder and director of various educational institutions in Israel. 

Red Cross Blood Drive at Kneseth Israel
Monday, July 12, 2004

Over 30 people stopped by to donate blood at the American Red Cross blood drive held at Congregation Kneseth Israel.  Kudos to Miriam Monias for chairing this drive and to all of the volunteers and donors.  Over 21 pints of blood were collected, the highest ever at our synagogue.

Adrienne Weiss Dink Bat Mitzvah
Sunday, August 22, 2004

Adrienne Weiss Dink, daughter of Michael Dink and Robin Weiss, became a Bat Mitzvah on Sunday, August 22.  Adrienne is going into the 8th grade at  Beth Tfiloh  School in Baltimore and is a graduate of the Aleph Bet Jewish Day School.  She led many prayers from the siddur, and chanted the Haftorah for parsha Ki Tetzei.

Mitzvah Nosh & Lecture
Guest Speaker Dr. Shimon Shokek
Sunday, August 29, 2004

Congregation Kneseth Israel was honored to have Dr. Shimon Shokek, a well-known author, scholar, and Professor of Philosophy and Mysticism at Baltimore Hebrew University and Goucher College as a guest speaker for a "Mitzvah Lecture and Nosh". The topic of the lecture was "Repentance and Forgiveness in Jewish Spirituality -- Standing at the Gates of Holiness in the Jewish High Holy Days".  Those who attended brought a non-perishable food item that was donated to the Annapolis Food Link, which feeds the needy in the community.  

2004/5765 High Holiday Choir

Once again this year, the High Holiday choir added more meaning and pleasure to the services on Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur.  Pictured above is this year's choir, which includes in the front row left to right Moshe Shmeuli, Earl Diamond, Joseph Cohen, Rabbi Moshe Weisblum.  Back row left to right is Jody Goldsmith, Larry Goldstein, Steve Sutton, and Asher Friedman (Ba'al Shacharit from Brooklyn, NY).  Not pictured is Robert Epstein and choir director Mrs. Numa Lavy.

Succah Crew

A group of volunteers from a Cub Scout/Boy Scout troop helped take down the synagogue succah.  From left to right is Sammy Miller,  Rakesh Poojary, Scoutmaster Thomas Jones, Synagogue house committee member and handymand Aloys Evers (Evers Remodeling), Jaganath Poojary, synagogue board member and house committee volunteer Larry Wilner, and Ben Sonnenberg.  The scout troop is sponsored by  Congregation Kneseth Israel.  Nice job, guys!!

"Read Hebrew America" Program at Kneseth Israel

October 12, 2004 marked the beginning of the "Read Hebrew America/Canada" program, coordinated with the National Jewish Outreach Program, taught by Ilanit Evers.  This is a series of ten 90-minute courses, comprised of five classes of "Level  One Hebrew", and five course of "Level Two Hebrew".  The courses are free of charge and open to the public.  

Sisterhood Shabbat Dinner
November 12, 2004

Arnold & Rita Cohen (pictured above) generously sponsored a Shabbat dinner catered by the Kneseth Israel Sisterhood on November 12, in honor of their 5th wedding anniversary.

Uri Arkin-Sarah Krimins Wedding
December 12, 2004

Sarah Krimins, daughter of Dr. David and Rosalind Krimins, were married at Congregation Kneseth Israel on the fifth day of Chanukah.  The wedding featured all of the traditions of a Jewish wedding, including the chatan's tish (groom's table), the bedeken (veiling of the bride), the chuppah, and a real freilach reception and seudah (meal).  Entertainment was provided by the Kol Chayim klezmer orchestra.
